Snoring classifications: temporary and long-term

There are two classifications for snoring, temporary and long-term.

Occasionally snoring falls under temporary snoring, and lifestyle changes can improve the severity and frequency. Common factors that cause temporary snoring include:

  • Consumption of alcohol
  • Sedative medication
  • Excessive smoking
  • Seasonal allergies
  • Swollen tonsils or adenoids, especially in children
  • Sleeping position
  • The cold or flu

Individuals who repeatedly snore and experience poor sleep quality are at high risk of suffering from sleep apnea and should seek medical advice immediately to improve the symptoms. Factors that can cause long-term snoring include:

  • Throat muscle weakness, causing the throat to close during sleep
  • Misaligned jaw, often caused by tension in the muscles
  • Fat gathering in and around the throat
  • Obstruction in the nasal passageway
  • Overall nose shape
  • Tissues at the top of airways touch each other, causing vibrations
  • Nasal and sinus problems
  • Excessive weight and obesity
  • Pregnancy, leading to rapid weight gain
  • Ageing, decreasing throat muscle strength and tone
  • The shape of your head and neck can create a narrower air way
